In traditional Chinese cosmology, the universe began with a "void" (represented by black) which then gave rise to the Earth (represented by yellow). This appears as 'xuanhuang' often translated as 'black and yellow'. Used in Shang times it came to represent day and night, heaven and earth, and eventually yin and yang.
