Design, Sculpture &amp; Installation Award Bio Gough is a contemporary artist whose practice uses abstract geometry to explore connection – between individuals, communities and the environments they inhabit. Working across drawing, painting and sculpture, she visualises relationships rather than objects, using geometry as a shared visual language through which to consider how we are linked rather than separate. Her work draws on ideas from nature, cosmology and systems thinking, treating geometry as a bridge between physical and metaphysical realms. These forms become tools for reflecting on existence, interdependence and the ways in which human experience is embedded within larger ecological and social structures. While each work operates as an individual composition, her paintings are conceived as interrelated elements within a larger system. Shapes, colours and structures echo across the series, forming visual links that mirror human connection – between people, places and shared environments. At a time when communities are negotiating cultural, political and social division, Gough’s work proposes an alternative visual language grounded in relationship and continuity. Through abstraction, it offers a contemplative space for considering how connection is formed, sustained and imagined. Her art practice draws from years of experience as a designer. In the late 80’s, she moved to London (from Australia) to undertake design studies at The London College of Printing (now ual:). These were formative years, from which her love of typography, minimalist design and an introduction to Bauhaus aesthetics became the foundation of her 30 year design practice and, where threads can be seen in her current day art practice. An opportunity for a traditional animation traineeship at the Disney Studios in Sydney in 2005 became a pivotal part of her conceptual thinking. With hand drawn animation – still drawings are presented linearly over time, to create the ‘illusion of life’ when viewed sequentially. It was here that she started to think deeply about time (ourselves) as it flows continuously from past to present and into the future.&nbsp; She has exhibited in the United States, Germany and Australia – where her work has been included in the 65th &amp; 66th Blake Prize and the Sydney VIVID Light Festival, along with achievements such as the UNSWA&amp;D Sculpture &amp; Installation Award. Exhibitions in Los Angeles have included: Made in California group shows, outer building neon installations and neon sculpture in the Miracle Mile district. A three month Berlin residency in 2023 concluded with a solo presentation and her recent solo exhibition in Los Angeles was featured in Curate LA’s ‘This Week’s Must See Art’ member news. abstract geometry to explore connection — between individuals, communities and the environments they inhabit. Working across drawing, painting and sculpture, she visualises relationships rather than objects, using geometry as a shared visual language through which to consider how we are linked rather than separate. Her work draws on ideas from nature, cosmology and systems thinking, treating geometry as a bridge between physical and metaphysical realms. These forms become tools for reflecting on existence, interdependence and the ways in which human experience is embedded within larger ecological and social structures. The ongoing painting series YOU ARE began in Berlin and continued in Los Angeles, exploring how abstract form can express relational belonging. Developed during a six-month residency at Fremantle Arts Centre, YOU ARE: CONNECTED extends this investigation through a new body of work created in Fremantle. While each work operates as an individual composition, the paintings are conceived as interrelated elements within a larger system. Shapes, colours and structures echo across the series, forming visual links that mirror human connection — between people, places and shared environments. At a time when communities are negotiating cultural, political and social division, Gough’s work proposes an alternative visual language grounded in relationship and continuity. Through abstraction, YOU ARE: CONNECTED offers a contemplative space for considering how connection is formed, sustained and imagined. Her art practice draws from years of experience as a designer. In the late 80’s, she moved to London (from Australia) to undertake design studies at The London College of Printing (now ual:). These were formative years, from which her love of typography, minimalist design and an introduction to Bauhaus aesthetics became the foundation of her 30 year design practice and where threads can be seen in her current day art practice. She has exhibited in the United States, Germany and Australia – where her work has been included in the 65th &amp; 66th Blake Prize and the Sydney VIVID Light Festival. Exhibitions in Los Angeles have included: Made in California group shows, outer building neon installations, and neon sculptures in the Miracle Mile district. A three month Berlin residency in 2023 concluded with a solo presentation and her recent solo exhibition in Los Angeles was featured in Curate LA’s ‘This Week’s Must See Art’ member news. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. We are made to live together because of the interrelated structure of reality... [We are still here now!] But what does it mean to be here? Now? Indigenist health humanities scholar, writer, and public intellectual Chelsea Watego&nbsp;– a Munanjahli and South Sea Islander woman born and raised on Yuggera country, collaborates with Australian born, Los Angeles based artist Donna Gough, revealing the power of what it means to be here, now. Activating words from Watego's 'Dear Ancestor' essay through neon light, the installation is a reflective space for truth-telling, disrupting the dominant narrative that has been told throughout colonial histories and the continuing colonial process of violence and dispossession. Watego explains: ‘There really is an underestimation of the violence of living in a world that wishes you dead, who in your living, refuses to see you, and even in your excellence, renders you invisible or undeserving. We occupy a social world that refuses to see our humanity and not because it has yet to discover it, but precisely because its very existence is founded upon our violent erasure. It has no other way of knowing itself. On any given day, in any given place in encountering the settlers you can be guaranteed that most if not all would have no idea whose land they are walking on, working on or talking on. And, the thing is, they really need not know for them to exist in this place. ‘Still Here’, is a refusal to subscribe to the myth of our demise, a reminder to the colonisers that they did not succeed; never have and never will. We remain and continue to claim a being, derived through our embodied relation to our land and culture. It is in this presence that we are reminded that we are ‘still here’ despite their insistence that we only exist in a land far, far away, in a far away time. We do not speak of being there, but of being here. Because their notion of there, is a nowhere place. The latest living Ancestor, here, now, carries a responsibility not just of living, but to think deeply about what legacy will be left in that living. Throughout Watego’s life, her Aboriginal ancestry was known through her Ancestors, their stories, their experiences and their connections to place. But they are gone. She is still here, now. Gough’s approach to installation and neon aesthetics is often focused on conceptual wordplay, exploring the relationship between art and the duality of language through the complexity of the human experience. She is interested in the effect light has on our psychology and spatial perception, with its inherent ability to confront the eye and mind of the viewer. The artists respectfully acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation as the traditional owners of Tallawoladah, the land on which this work sat for the duration of the Vivid Festival.
